Fragrance 101

Yes, it’s true, this is me Teniola, writing on my blog, AGAIN! I know it’s been months without a post from which has happened due to unforeseen circumstances but I’m here with another intriguing post💃🏿💃🏿

“You’re never fully dressed without perfume”- C. Joybell C. I’m sure everyone reading this post has come across this quote at least once or twice or more times than you can count 🤷🏽‍♀️ but yes, it’s True perfume definitely does add a finishing touch to every outfit and every individual must have at least 3 perfumes in their lives.

Let’s think about it, can you imagine your life without perfume? Because I personally CANNOT. Perfume does a whole lot of different things like keeping unpleasant odors away, elevating your spirit, talking for you in a room before you even talk, setting the mood of the day, creating the perfect ambience when meeting people and a long list of things we can’t even define. So think twice before stepping out of your house without fragrance😞

Sometimes people Do fragrance all wrong! I’ll be listing the top Dos and Don’ts of perfumes to you gain the knowledge of how to use fragrance correctly.

Perfume Dos

1. Do Apply lotion to skin to keep you moisturizer before using perfumes so they last longer on your skin.

2. Do wear perfumes everyday and never be caught in public without fragrance.

3. Do choose your perfumes correctly and be sure to get fragrance that works for you. When picking fragrances there are four main scents to consider: floral, fresh, oriental, and woody.

“The beauty of fragrance is that it speaks to your heart…and hopefully someone else’s” – Elizabeth Taylor

Perfume Don’ts

1. Don’t stick to one particular perfume, own at least 3 perfumes! Fragrance layering is key to achieving the ultimate scent.👌

2. Don’t apply too much perfume because this might result to choking. Contrary to popular belief, applying too much perfume doesn’t necessarily make it last longer.

3. Don’t rub your perfumes!!! Over and over again, on TV commercials, around us, we’ve seen people rubbing their wrists together after applying cologne. Rubbing it eliminates the lighter-molecule top scents leaving heavier notes. Let your perfumes air-dry.

4. Don’t mix perfume with sweat EVER. Sometimes we realize we’ve add a long day and we’re all sweaty and sometimes grab a perfume to smell better. This makes it even worse! And this is the beginning of your unpleasant day and ruining your experience because you’ll smell BAD BAD.

Correct ways to wear fragrance Apply fragrance on the hot spots of your body, do not apply fragrances directly onto your clothes. Wear more fragrance on the nape of your neck, your inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind ear lobes, behind knees and inner elbows. This are the top perfume spots on your body to make your perfume last longer and keep you smelling fresh all day. 👍

CROTCHET (featured writer)

This post is written by Gbemisola Mba a professional Nigerian crotchet maker

When I was little, I always loved watching my grandma knit with her knitting needles, I found it very fascinating and I made attempts of knitting several times and I was only 6 years old. My auntie saw how enthusiastic I was toward knitting then she taught me how to knit, then she introduced crocheting to me, I fell in love with crocheting, I preferred it to knitting. I learnt how to crochet when I was in primary school, since then I have been doing the art till this very day.

I decided to turn my talent of crocheting into a business three years ago when I came across a crochet pattern for a top. I used to make only caps and bags because I didn’t know how to make clothes by crocheting them. Then I found the patterns for making skirts, different types of top for example the off the shoulder top, halter tops, cropped tops, ultra cropped tops, and so on.

BACKGROUND OF CROCHETING

Crochet  is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is derived from the French term crochet, meaning ‘small hook’. These are made of materials such as metal, wood, or plastic and are manufactured commercially and produced in artisan workshops. The salient difference between crochet and knitting, beyond the implements used for their production, is that each stitch in crochet is completed before the next one is begun, while knitting keeps a large number of stitches open at a time. (Variant forms such as Tunisian crochet and broomstick lace keep multiple crochet stitches open at a time.(that was gotten from Wikipedia 😉).

 More interesting facts about crochet
You can create anything in this world with just 1 hook and yarn balls
Basic materials used for crocheting are yarn balls and a hook, then other materials such as tape measure and gauge measure are both used for measuring crocheted work and counting stitches in order to get a perfect fitting…
Crocheting is therapeutic! Because it has a rhythmic movement that can aid thinking properly, it works for me!

Crocheting has to be one of the best arts I’m involved in, I love how I can create complex things with just a hook and a yarn.

After my last post a lot of people had questions about what exactly crotchet was all about them I reached out to Gbemi to do a post on it, hope you guys enjoy and embrace crotchet !

Bringing style to your closet 2019

Keeping up with your style in Nigeria can be such a task at times as not so much options are at our disposal, we do not have the likes of street brands like mango, h&m, river island, misguided amongst others.

To the best of my knowledge, Asos is the only brand that delivers to Nigeria and have quite interesting stuff to shop from, there are a lot of retail fashions stores in Nigeria doing well and bringing exquisite pieces to us regardless.

Most people who live in Nigeria like I do that I have had discussions with decide to go simple on the outfits because “getting quality clothes in Nigeria is so EXPENSIVE so I’ll just get right into the simple tricks to follow to turn every head when you walk into a room without breaking the bank and look your best !

1. Having your personal trademark style: This is what you might have known or heard from somewhere but the importance of having your own personal style cannot be overemphasized, you should put in mind the kind of pieces you would wear so as to stay on the budget, you can decide to stay close and safe so you don’t end up shopping and getting everything in the market but still have nothing to wear every single day, one important thing however with having your own personal style is you don’t always want to step out as expected, you should try to moderate it so your every look is not predetermined, switch it up once in a while to always stay on the fashion scene.

2. Knowing your budget and shopping in your budget: An important factor that should stay at the back of our minds when going shopping, know your budget, you don’t want to be having 25,000 naira as your net worth and splurging it on a Fila disruptor and end up having no money to eat or live life. Knowing your budget will help determine the right stores to go to and what exactly to get to make you a thousand bucks in an instant.

3. Thrifting: Repeat after me “thrifting will not do me wrong” Thrifting is an important tip to serving on a budget, getting barely old clothes from your local market and spicing and styling it up to look perfect on your day-to-day is a Win Win. It’s common knowledge that a lot of people do not like to thrift because of the popular idea that all thrifted clothes are bad clothes but Verily Verily I will say, the quality of clothes you get out of thrifting is nothing less of a Christmas miracle. Popular places to get thrift pieces in Lagos, Nigeria are: Lagos Island, Yaba, Sabo Market at Ikorodu, Aswani Market, Isolo.

4. Exploring the benefit of creative designers here in Nigeria: There are young creative designers breaking the market and working everyday to bring the best quality to fabrics. In Lagos, I do not see a lot of readily Made designs that suites the personal taste of every single person, making your own custom outfits helps to speak truth to your style and brings originality, simply get your fabric, send what you’ll like to make to the designer and have your outfit delivered to you in little or no time. However, we have the widespread conception that “Nigerian tailors destroy the fabric or take years to deliver”.

I’ll recommend two trusted designers you surely cannot go wrong with !

Instagram: 1. @moreofmors

2. @damzcreations

5. Crotchet: The real tea nobody is talking to you about, crotchet brings style, personality, enthusiasm, originality to you on a platter of gold. Going out in a crotchet outfit accurately styled is ensured to snatch all the wigs and edges everywhere you go. However we do not have a variety of crotchet makers. But one I know who has something for both genders, the best quality and a one of a kind customer service in town.

MET GALA 2019

The MET GALA is formally known as the Costume Institute Gala and is an annual fundraiser , it has since been chaired by the US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and can easily be described as “fashion’s biggest night out.” The theme for the year was “camp” inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “notes on camp”

To the fun stuff, there was definitely the lows and the highs fashion appearances of the worlds biggest celebrities, from those who straight up seemed to not have gotten the theme, to the ones that were just a big NO, down to the masterpieces on the red carpet.

Let’s have a quick run down of my top five and worst five pieces of the Met Gala:

TOP FIVE

1. CARDI B:  The top rapper changing the game right now went ALL OUT for the gala wearing the Red Feather Thom Browne gown which is certainly not one we will be getting over any time soon, I STAN QUEEN !
2. Lady Gaga: Undoubtedly  got the theme and REPRESENTED accordingly, can’t even joke.
3.  Celine Dion: The singer wore a 22 pound gold Oscar de la RENTA DRESS and came through with all the camping ever possible!
4. Zendaya: The actress and singer made a dramatic fairytale entrance in her black Tommy hilfiger dress when her stylist Law Roach waved a wand and transformed her dress into a glowing baby blue gown in regards to the cinderalla dress, SIS came through !
5. Katy Perry: The singer appeared in Moschino, JEREMY SCOTT as a chandelier with electric candles and dripping with crystals, can’t even get over this in years to come !

 WORST FIVE

1. James Charles: Dressed in Alexander Wang, I can’t even pretend to deal with what the youtuber really thought of the theme “camp”.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow: What exactly was this not even prom worthy outfit doing on the carpet, just give the nightgown away already, UGH!
3. Karlie Kloss: Speechless, what the exact f**k, the MET, not your friend’s bridal shower Karlie.4. Frank Ocean: All black outfit from Prada, Frank guide the premises already since you decide to show up as security ?
5. Kanye West: This isn’t what we’re talking about on here.

Despite the up and downs of fashion at the MET, the event is one the fashion scene won’t be forgetting in a long while.

Get into the comments and tell me about your best and worst looks at the MET 2019.😊

Fashion, Style and Design

What is Fashion ? What is style ? What is design ? Thinking about it really what are these things, I don’t think anybody has ever come up with a “definition” that encompasses all that fashion, style and design can REALLY be.

What do those things mean to me ?

Fashion really is what we tell ourselves that it is, it can act as one of the most versatile subject to ever be on the face of the earth, there is no particular pattern to follow when one feels to be “fashionable” or describing fashion.

Different cultural and social factors have shown to influence the style of people as what we know might be normal to someone living in the United States may be the most terrible thing someone living in Iraq might have seen her whole life.

Therefore, if you may ask me I’ll say fashion is First of all, creativity, art, aesthetic,self-expression and without doubt a way of life.

I do not think any two persons has the SAME style, style is what defines you, it’s funny how your friends just see an outfit and just think or never imagine you wearing them because it has never been your “style”.Style can be what defines you and helps you discover yourself.

Although there can be fashion trends or fashion pieces that are point blank “terrible ideas”,Do we really think that there are actually fashion trends that never ever should have existed or some pieces that definitely should have never left the sketchbook.

Let’s get talking in the comments and make sure to share your ideas and your opinions with me !😊😊😊
